Last spring, one of our chickens was killed by a raccoon. The one remaining hen seemed sad and lonely; then she went broody. So to console her, we bought some fertilized eggs from a friend and put them under her alongside the golf ball she was attempting to hatch.
On July 1, one of the eggs hatched, and Chimi, the hen, took great pride in teaching her baby all about the world.
She has been adorably hilarious to watch, fussing over her baby and showing it how to hunt bugs and so on.
We are hoping Little Peep is a pullet so she'll become a hen, since roosters aren't allowed in town.
