My goodness, is it Friday already?
Hmm, this week in a nutshell:
1. Bean broke a window under the care of the previous babysitter, who was much too sweet and soft and nice. She could not get him to listen to her, and things escalated until we had a broken window on our hands and she quit. Sigh. He was merely curious to see what would happen if he hit it with a hammer...
2. On a good note, our previous babysitter, Alyssa, came back! Yay! The kids adore her, and she has a soft spot especially for Bean. She manages his strong little personality quite well, so I can breathe a sigh of relief and get working from 3-5 every afternoon.
3. Abi and I both had a cold/fever thing this week. Mostly a drippy nose and slight fever. She did not go into turtle mode, which I call an improvement. She did sniffle until I thought I was going to end up in the loony bin though. Sniffling is one of those things that makes me crazy! This morning, I finally had to resort to earphones and the Les Miserables sountrack for a while.
4. The weather was gray and rainy. So we stayed inside and watched Kipper, and tried to keep from biting each other's heads off. Curly and Mister drew elaborate pictures, and Bean pretended to make a lot of "Spagghy Noodoes" (spaghetti noodles). Abi watched Sesame Street.
5. I had Curly and Mister take the 5 Love Languages for Kids quiz, and Curly tested as having Acts of Service as her primary love language, while Mister tested more of a Quality Time guy. I've been trying to do things that especially speak to their love language and I think I'm noticing a positive response. So far, Bean and Abi are too young to figure out, so I try to show them love in as many ways as I can think.
6. Hubby took me to Sushi for dinner. Alyssa had the kids, and I really enjoyed the break. We even sampled the wasabi...that's living life on the edge right there.
7. I've been feeling badly that I don't do more Ethiopian cultural things. I haven't made any injera for weeks, and we have not learned any new Amharic words. The reason for this, though, is that the more Abi adjusts to being an American, the more anything that reminds her of home makes her terribly sad. I think she goes through spells of really bad homesickness, and now instead of liking the Ethiopian stuff, she tends to want to avoid it. So for her sake, I have been taking it easy on that stuff for now. I hope to do more in the future, once she feels more secure in her identity here.
8. I don't really miss Shadow. I think about him a lot and wonder how he is doing. I miss having him around to feed scraps. But I don't miss him much. I wonder what that says about "us."
9. It occurred to me that sometime about now is when Curly matriculates to second grade, and Mister is officially in Kindergarten. Time to start teaching him colors... oh wait. He's reading easy chapter books and doing multiplication. Never mind.
10. We're back on the rotation at church this week. Slowly, life is picking up again. I'm very, very ready for it. Hubby preached the sermon last week, and did a fantastic job. You can hear it here, or read it on his blog, here, here and here. This Sunday I will make and run the powerpoint slideshow (words for the congregational singing) and we'll do music in a few weeks. We tried to never schedule ourselves at the same time, though, so one of us can always stay with Abi.
That's it for the week. Hopefully our adventures this weekend will result in a few fun posts. To end, I'll leave you with a few pictures from our morning this morning. :)
